Concerns about the Canadian dollar’s fluctuation, the stress of a two-team expansion draft and the league’s desire to correct its geographical imbalance — the Eastern Conference already has 16 teams, while Las Vegas will be the 15th in the West — prompted the governors to go with Las Vegas alone.

Although ice doesn’t last long in the desert, Las Vegas has had an appetite for hockey since the Kings and New York Rangers played a memorable outdoor exhibition game here in 1991. “We’re dedicated to it. “They have a different fan base than we do. Foley announced plans to devote considerable resources to building community interest in youth hockey, including a two-rink team training complex that will be “open to all.”

With nearly 2.2 million people in the last census, Las Vegas is the largest population center in the U.S. These components, the ones within the control of the Quebec City applicant, are first-rate.”

Bettman also announced that an expansion bid from Quebec City was “deferred” indefinitely, allowing Las Vegas to enter the league alone in the Pacific Division. “There is no doubt as to the suitability of the Videotron Centre as a home for a team, and there is no doubt regarding the ownership credentials or the eagerness to own a team of Quebecor, which has been an outstanding partner. We’ll leave no stone unturned in our dedication, in our pursuit of hockey for Las Vegas, not just for our team, but for the community.”

“We think this is a tremendously exciting opportunity, not just for Las Vegas, but for the league as well,” Bettman said, calling Las Vegas “a vibrant, growing, global destination city.”

Bettman said the league made the move largely due to the persistence and strength of the ownership group led by Foley, a financial services tycoon, who has been working on the idea for three years. We’re going to work through the league.”

“There is no doubt as to the passion for hockey in Quebec City,” Bettman said. Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis is interested in partnering with Vegas interests to build an enormous domed football stadium for his team.

The National Hockey League’s 31st franchise will play in Las Vegas beginning in 2017, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Wednesday.

“I think the NFL would be great here,” Foley said. “I’m an Army guy, but maybe that’s not the right name for the team at this time. He has strongly considered the Black Knights, a name that has special meaning to Foley, a West Point graduate.

The endurance of that appetite will depend on Foley’s ability to keep fans excited about the newest show in town, but the NHL seems confident it’s getting in early to a growing market. without a team in the major professional sports. The league’s alignment and playoff format won’t change.

Foley realizes his team might not be alone in Vegas for long. Foley has already accepted more than 14,000 season ticket deposits and sold out all 44 suites in the 17,500-seat rink built by MGM Resorts International and Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Los Angeles Kings.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

“We won’t sell out every game with season-ticket holders, but I believe it’s going to be 85 percent, 90 percent (filled by season ticket holders),” Foley said.

Along with a top-six pick in next year’s draft, the Vegas franchise will be stocked by a June 2017 expansion draft that will be more favorable than previous drafts, theoretically allowing Foley’s team to become competitive more quickly. The new team will play in T-Mobile Arena, the $375 million building that opened just off the Las Vegas Strip in April.

“I love Black Knights,” Foley said. Vegas was an economic boomtown in the previous decade, and the NHL is betting that its slowed growth hasn’t curbed the city’s appetite for sports and spectacles.

On a 109-degree day in the Mojave Desert’s gambling mecca, the NHL’s Board of Governors awarded the team to billionaire businessman Bill Foley, who is expected to pay $500 million to the NHL’s other owners as an expansion fee. I don’t think it will affect us.”

The NHL is expanding for the first time since 2000, when Minnesota and Columbus each paid $80 million to join the league.

Sports leagues once rejected the city outright due to concerns about corruption from Vegas’ massive sports betting economy, but the NHL and the NFL no longer share those worries, with Bettman calling his sport “less susceptible” to gambling interests due to the small volume of bets placed on hockey.

Bettman strongly praised the bid backed by telecommunications giant Quebecor to return the league to Quebec City, the former home of the Quebec Nordiques. Foley is joined by minority partners Joe and Gavin Maloof, the former owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

Foley hasn’t decided on a nickname or logo for his team, but an announcement could be made in the next few weeks. The IHL’s Las Vegas Thunder sometimes drew more fans than UNLV’s beloved basketball team at the Thomas and Mack Arena in the 1990s, and the Minnesota Wild’s Jason Zucker leads a handful of locals who went on to hockey careers.

. Las Vegas will have four nearby rivals — at least by West Coast standards: the league’s three California teams and the Arizona Coyotes.

“We want everyone to be a fan,” said Foley, who fell in love with pond hockey while growing up in Canada.

Foley’s also bid had the enormous advantage of an NHL-ready arena built with private funding and eager for a flagship tenant

The extra dollar is essentially the bookie’s fee for accepting our wagers.

TotalsThe second most popular method of wagering on basketball is in betting totals, also known as over/unders. Many fans find that dealing with the point spread, or with totals, easier than using the money line.

What this means is that the Celtics have to win by 11 or more points for its bettors to win their bet, while those betting on the Knicks would win their wagers if the Knicks won the game or lost by nine points or less. In parlays and teasers bettors must correctly predict the winners of two or more games. Even if you correctly pick five out of six games, a parlay or teaser wager is still a loss.

With the point spread, the team expected to win will be called the favorite, while the team expected to lose will be called the underdog. If I bet $11 on the Celtics and you bet $11 on the Knicks, the bookie collects $22 between us, but only returns $21 to the winner. One is the money line wager, which is a bet on the winner of the game without the point spread. For a more detailed explanation of totals see Introduction to Totals.

Essentially, a total is the predicted combined score of the two teams playing. The team expected to win gives, or lays, points to the team expected to lose for betting purposes.

When betting against the point spread, bettors are asked to lay 11-to-10 odds, which means that they risk $11 to win $10. More about money line betting can be found at Introduction to Money Lines.

The money line odds on a game will look something like:

In our hypothetical game between the Knicks and the Celtics, the over/under number might be 188. If the Celtics win by exactly 10 points, the bet is a push, or a tie, and no money changes hands.

Money Line WagersWhile betting against the point spread or on totals make up the vast majority of basketball wagers, bettors also have several other betting options available to them. This is how the bookies and sportsbooks make their money. On parlays, bettors have the option of betting against the point spread or using the money line, while teasers are made using the point spread and players can adjust the point spread in their favor.

The one catch about parlays and teasers is that all of your teams must win or the entire bet is a loss. Bettors wagering on the over would win their bets if the total combined score was 189 or greater, while bettors wagering on the under would win their bets if the combined total score was 187 or fewer points. For a more detailed explanation of the point spread see Introduction to Point Spreads.. Again, if the combined score is exactly 188 points, the bet is considered a push, or a tie, and no money changes hands.

Boston Celtics -300

New York Knicks +240

Parlays and TeasersThe other types of wagers involving basketball come in the form of parlays and teasers, which are sometimes called exotic bets. But say the point spread will make the Celtics a 10-point favorite.

How to Bet BasketballOf the four major sports, basketball is one of the easiest to bet on.

By Allen Moody

What this means is that bettors taking the Celtics are asked to put up $30 to win $10, while those believing the Knicks will win are asked to risk $10 to win $24.

Both wagers are described in more detail at How to Bet Parlays and How to Bet Teasers.

Betting basketball isn’t difficult and it typically ranks second in terms of betting dollars behind football. But because some teams are given a better than 50-percent chance of winning, money line wagers are made using odds, so that if you bet on the team expected to win you will be asked to risk considerably more than you stand to win. If you know how to bet on football, you already pretty much know how to bet on basketball.

The most common method of betting basketball involves the point spread, which is a handicap the sportsbooks impose on one team to make both teams equal in terms of betting. Along with football, basketball use the point spread for wagering on sides (teams), as well as an over/under number. A number will be posted and bettors have the option of wagering more than the predicted total points will be scored (over), or less than the predicted total points will be scored (under).

All sports betting was done with money lines at one point, but with too many people betting on the obvious favorites all of the time, the point spread was introduced and sports betting hasn’t been the same since.

Just as with the point spread, bettors are asked to lay 11-to-10 odds and risk $11 to win $10 on each over/under wager.

All Rights Reserved. Before becoming a referee, Donaghy played varsity basketball at Villanova University.

“As we previously stated, we have been cooperating with the FBI in their investigation of allegations that a single NBA referee bet on NBA games that he officiated,” commissioner David Stern said in a statement Friday afternoon.

The FBI probe, which began recently, also involves allegations that the referee had connections to organized crime associates. Over the years it has been a mortal fear of all leagues that the guardians of their game would be somehow touched by scandal, reports CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian.

© 2007 CBS Interactive Inc. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Donaghy officiated 68 games in the 2005-06 season and 63 games in 2006-07. Other arrests are expected, the official said.

“You have a lot of acquaintances and very few friends. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

“We would like to assure our fans that no amount of effort, time or personnel is being spared to assist in this investigation, to bring to justice an individual who has betrayed the most sacred trust in professional sports, and to take the necessary steps to protect against this ever happening again.”

Although asked by the government not to comment, Stern said the naming of Donaghy prompted a fuller statement.

The investigation first was reported Friday by the New York Post.

Benson said he didn’t work with Donaghy much.

The law enforcement official said the bets involved thousands of dollars and were made on games during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.

“If these allegations are true, it just cuts to the heart of the integrity of the sport,” says basketball analyst Len Elmore.

The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. I probably worked a handful of games with him overall, just a handful.”

According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.. He has seven years of CBA officiating experience including the 1993 CBA All-Star Game and five years of high school officiating experience in Pennsylvania. He also worked 20 playoff games, including five last season.

The referee had a gambling problem, according to the official, and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.

The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.

Defense attorney John Lauro confirmed Donaghy is under investigation but refused to comment on the allegations or the case.

“I’m shocked, terribly shocked,” said Gary Benson, an NBA official for 17 years who retired two years ago because of knee problems. “Those are people that you work with and that you literally — you spend more time with those people than you do with your family.”

In all, Donaghy has officiated 704 regular season games and 15 playoff games, CBS News reports. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. ..
